Italian Libya

Italian Libya stamps form part of our Italian Colonies stamps offering at Io Collezionista. In 1934 the Libyan territory, taking in both Cyrenaica and Tripolitania, was unified into the General Government of Libya, which recognised Libyan subjects as Italian Libyan citizens with fundamental rights within the colony. The shared history of Italy and Libya ended in 1947, when under the treaties Italy signed our country was obliged to give up the colony. From the 1930s onwards thousands of Italian citizens moved to Libya under government schemes that brought infrastructure and considerable economic development to the country. In 2008 the Italian Government reached an agreement with Libya on compensation for the damage suffered during the colonial period, settled at a figure of 5 billion US dollars in money and infrastructure.
