Perfins

Perfins for sale at Io Collezionista. This category gathers perfins, a word formed by contracting perforated initials or perforated insignia. The first country to use perfin stamps was Great Britain in 1868. The idea behind the perfin was simple but effective: any stamp carrying the punched holes, sometimes a personalised pattern, could not be returned and refunded by the postal service, which discouraged would be stamp thieves. Within a decade the use of perfins spread to Denmark, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium, and it lasted until the arrival of franking machines.
