Angola

Angola stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. The southern African state owes its name to the word Ngola, meaning majesty, the term of respect used to address the rulers of the Ndongo kingdom. The first contacts between Portuguese travellers and local peoples probably date to the Middle Ages, but only towards the end of the 15th century did explorers push inland, establishing profitable trading relations with the other main kingdoms of the area, Benguela and Kongo. The city of Mbanza Kongo, once the seat of the king of Kongo, was added to the Unesco world heritage list in 2017. The stamps in this category are dedicated almost entirely to local wildlife, from the leopard and the zebra to the lion and the rhinoceros.
