Brazil
Brazil stamps, available at Io Collezionista. With a surface area of 8,5 million square kilometres, Brazil makes up almost half of South America. The country's name may derive from the popular name of a tree of the virgin forest, the Pau brasil, literally brasil tree, or from the reddish colour of its resin. An alternative and less widely accepted theory points to a legend that spread after Portuguese colonisation, centred on a mysterious island off Ireland called Hy-Brasil. This category holds stamps dedicated to the second and last emperor of Brazil, Pedro II, known as the Magnanimous and in office from 1831 to 1899, and also to the third Pan-American congress, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1906.
