South Korea gained independence in 1945 following Japan's capitulation in the Second World War; diplomatic relations between the two countries formally resumed only in 1965 with the Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea. The state took its present form in 1953, the year the bloody Korean War (1950-1953) ended and a border was drawn between the two Koreas: a demilitarised area running for 248 km close to the 38th parallel, established under an agreement signed by China, the UN and North Korea.
