Egypt

The most densely settled areas are the urban ones, which in turn lie close to the Nile, a river whose importance, not least for the development of agriculture, has been recognised since the time of the ancient Egyptians. It is the monumental archaeological remains left by the Egyptians that drive the tourist industry above all, first among them the pyramid complex at Giza, the last of the seven wonders of the ancient world to survive the passage of time. The Egyptian name Hwt ka Ptah, the house of the ka of Ptah, referring to the temple of the god Ptah at Memphis, in turn inspired the Greek term Aigyptos and the Latin Aegyptus, from which the modern European names for the country derive.
