Ghana

Ghana stamps available at Io Collezionista. In the aftermath of independence from the British Empire in 1957, the country chose to honour the ancient Ghana Empire, of the 4th to 11th centuries, by taking the official name Republic of Ghana and abandoning the colonial name Gold Coast, which came from the many gold deposits in the territory. The word, which in the Soninke language means warrior king, was strictly the title given to the reigning sovereign. At its height the kingdom came to include vast holdings north west of present day Ghana, near the rivers Senegal and Niger, corresponding to parts of the modern states of Senegal, Niger and Mauritania.
