Hong Kong

Hong Kong stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. The island of Hong Kong was ceded by China to the British Empire in 1842, following the first opium war. The bond between Hong Kong and the British would last until 1997, the year the 99 year lease agreed in 1898 came to an end. The name probably derives from an inlet between the small island of Aberdeen and the southern coast of Hong Kong, where the first contacts took place between the local fishing population and British sailors. In Cantonese heung gong can be rendered as fragrant harbour or harbour of incense. The spelling Hongkong remained in use until 1925, when the local government itself chose to separate the two words.
