Libya

After gaining independence in 1951 the nation lived through a period of relative calm until the coup of 1969, led by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. The name of the Rais would end up at the centre of the international political agenda in 2011, the year a violent civil war broke out and the United Nations Security Council passed resolution no. 1973, tabled by France, Lebanon and the United Kingdom. The military intervention that followed hastened the end of the civil war but dragged Libya into a political and institutional chaos in which many actors remain opposed to this day, from warlords to ISIS terrorists to the governments of Tobruk, recognised by the international community, and Tripoli, backed by General Khalifa Belqasim Haftar.
