Peru

Peru stamps available online at Io Collezionista. Peru was the heart of the largest pre Columbian state in the Americas, the Inca Empire, the four regions in the Quechua language, which reached its greatest extent between 1450 and 1525. Those same years saw the exploring campaign of the Spanish conquistadors, with whom there was a skirmish in 1531 near the island of Puna. Although that counts as a marginal episode in the Spanish military campaign in South America, it marked the beginning of the end for the Inca Empire and showed above all the technological and military gap between the natives and the European soldiers. According to the sources, the contingent of Francisco Pizarro, some 180 men of whom 27 were horsemen, found itself facing more than 3000 natives who had risen up after the non violent conquest of the island. Firearms and cavalry got the better of the local troops, who paid dearly for the absence of any military tactics and for their rudimentary wooden weapons. The Inca sovereign Atahualpa would be captured by deception a few years later and executed in 1533. Another forty years would pass before the last pockets of rebellion were subdued, and with the death of Tupac Amaru in 1572 the Inca Empire came finally to an end.
