Italy, Luogotenenza issues

Kingdom of Italy Luogotenenza stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. This category gathers all the stamps released between June 1944 and May 1946, when King Vittorio Emanuele III decided to abdicate shortly before the institutional referendum of 2 June 1946. During the so called Luogotenenza, the Lieutenancy period of the Kingdom of Italy, the king gave his son Umberto II of Savoy the role of Lieutenant General of the Realm. The appointment followed directly from the agreements reached at the Salerno turning point of 1944, which established temporary cooperation between the C.L.N., the National Liberation Committee, and the monarchy. Both undertook to form a government of national unity and to postpone the delicate question of the future institutional shape of the country.
