ITALY 1949

Italy 1949 stamps, for sale at Io Collezionista. In April 1949 Italy joined the Atlantic Pact, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO, together with eleven other founding countries: the United States, where Washington was the venue at which the pact was signed, Canada, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Luxembourg and Portugal. Joining NATO prevented what the USA feared, that the peninsula would fall into the Soviet Union's sphere of influence. In May of the same year the Soviet Union created the Warsaw Pact, a mirror agreement to NATO in response to West Germany entering the Western bloc, which to all intents and purposes marked the beginning of the Cold War. In the main Stamps category you can browse other subcategories devoted to particular historical periods, such as Italian States stamps and Italian Colonies stamps.
