ITALY 1953
Italian Republic stamps from 1953, for sale at Io Collezionista. 1953 was also the year of the electoral law of 31 March, remembered ever since as the legge truffa, the swindle law. The nickname came from the way the opposition described it during the campaign held ahead of the general election of 3 June. The law, pushed hard by the De Gasperi government but opposed by several figures within the majority, would have awarded a substantial majority bonus, 65% of the seats in the Chamber, to the list or group of allied lists that won more than half the valid votes. In the election of 3 June no bloc reached that threshold, and the following year the swindle law was repealed by law no. 651 of 31 July.
