Italian Republic stamps from 1954, available worldwide at Io Collezionista. 3 January 1954 was an important date for Italians, who were able to watch the first edition of the television news on the only channel available at the time, the Programma Nazionale, today's Rai 1. More broadly, from that date various programmes began to be broadcast regularly, among them Domenica Sportiva, the historic sports programme still on air on Sundays. Because so few transmitters had been installed, the Programma Nazionale was at first visible to only one third of the population, in the regions of Umbria, Lazio, Tuscany, Emilia, Liguria, Piedmont and Lombardy.
