In 1957, the year these Italian Republic stamps were issued, the Fiat Nuova 500 came to market, better known simply as the 500; the official name had been chosen to set it apart from the earlier 500 known as the Topolino. Priced at 490,000 lire, the model set out to win over owners of the old 500 Topolino and riders of small motorcycles, though several revisions proved necessary before the 500 achieved the success Fiat had hoped for. Cars of the first series, built between July and September of that year, are very rare and command a high price on the market.
