The book Una Vita Violenta by Pier Paolo Pasolini appeared in November 1959, the year these Italian Republic stamps were also issued. In 1962 the film adaptation reached cinemas as well. The novel had come second for the 1959 Strega Prize, behind Il Gattopardo.
