Italian Republic stamps from 1973, available worldwide at Io Collezionista. In September 1973, the year in which these Italian Republic stamps were issued, the monthly Rinascita published an essay by Enrico Berlinguer, secretary of the PCI, that laid the ground for the so called historic compromise, the rapprochement between the Christian Democrats and the Italian Communist Party. The dialogue continued for several years but ended abruptly in 1978, the year of the kidnapping and subsequent killing of Aldo Moro, president of the DC and a supporter of bringing the PCI into the governing majority, by the Red Brigades. Among the most interesting Italian Republic stamps of 1973 is a 50 Lire stamp from 1973 dedicated to the centenary of the Hydrographic Institute.
