In 1974, the year these Italian Republic stamps refer to, Indro Montanelli founded Il Giornale Nuovo, known from 1983 onwards simply as Il Giornale, the newspaper he would edit until 1994. He left the title together with 55 other journalists, in complete disagreement with the entry into politics of Silvio Berlusconi, whose family had owned Il Giornale since 1979, and with the editorial line imposed by the Milanese businessman.
