In 1980, the year the Italian Republic stamps in this subcategory refer to, Umberto Eco's novel Il Nome della Rosa (The Name of the Rose) was published in its first Bompiani edition. Critical reception was very good and in 1981 the book also won the prestigious Premio Strega. Over forty years the novel, which Eco himself curiously called overrated and one of his less successful works, has sold more than 50 million copies and been translated into 40 languages; a film followed in 1986, with Sean Connery as the protagonist William, and a television series in 2019, this time with John Turturro, broadcast on Rai 1.
