On 30 April 1986, the year to which the Italian Republic stamps in this subcategory refer, the National University Centre for Electronic Computing, CNUCE, at the University of Pisa established the first Internet connection from the Italian peninsula, the fourth in Europe to interface with the network. Curiously the event drew the attention of neither the press and television nor the Italian scientific community. CNUCE went on to supervise the management of the .IT top level domain from 1987 to 1992.
