ITALY 1988

Italian Republic stamps from 1988, available online at Io Collezionista. The year 1988, to which the issues gathered in this Italian Republic Stamps subcategory belong, would prove an important one for Italian justice and for the institutions engaged against the Mafia. Following the trials linked to the Pizza Connection operation (1979-1984), an investigation run in the United States by the FBI but supported by members of the Palermo antimafia pool such as Giovanni Falcone and Gioacchino Natoli, more than 300 arrest warrants were issued across Italy (Naples, Palermo) and the United States (New York). Investigators had uncovered a complex and efficient heroin production and distribution network that reached from Italy to the street markets of Europe and North America. Among the most interesting Italian Republic stamps of 1988 are 8 stamps of 750 Lire from 1988 dedicated to Italian labour (complete set) and 4 stamps from 1988 dedicated to Italian cinema (complete set). The main Stamps category also offers other subcategories devoted to specific historical periods, such as Italian States Stamps and Italian Colonies Stamps.
