The criminal organizations raised the stakes, first killing Giovanni Falcone on 25 May in the Capaci bombing, with an explosion powerful enough to destroy a stretch of the A29 motorway, and then Paolo Borsellino on 19 July in the via D'Amelio bombing, with a car full of explosive parked near the home of the magistrate's mother.
