ITALY 1993

Italian Republic stamps from 1993, available online at Io Collezionista. On 15 January 1993, the year to which the stamps in this subcategory refer, Toto Riina, the undisputed head of Cosa Nostra, was captured. Riina had been a fugitive for almost 24 years and would later be recognised as the man who ordered the Capaci and via d'Amelio massacres, and as a figure involved in the so called State Mafia negotiation. He was reportedly betrayed by Bernardo Provenzano, his effective successor at the top of Cosa Nostra from 1995 to 2006, the year of Provenzano's own capture, and many aspects of that affair remain unclear to this day. Among the most interesting Italian Republic stamps are 4 stamps of 750 Lire from 1993 dedicated to Milan, champions of Italy. In the main Stamps category you can browse other subcategories devoted to particular historical periods, such as Italian States Stamps and Italian Colonies Stamps.
