On 29 January of the year these Italian Republic stamps belong to, a violent fire, the second in its history after the first in 1836, almost completely destroyed the Gran Teatro La Fenice, today the principal opera house of Venice. The subsequent investigation identified those responsible for the reckless act within the firm contracted to carry out maintenance work: they intended to start a small fire so as to justify the delays they had accumulated. After the disastrous fire at Notre-Dame cathedral on 15 April 2019, La Fenice was among the first to express its solidarity with the city of Paris and with the French people.
