Italian Republic stamps from 1998, for sale at Io Collezionista. On 3 January 1998, the year in which these Italian Republic stamps were issued, a United States military aircraft sliced clean through the cable of a cable car near the ski resort of Cavalese. All 20 people in the gondola died in the disaster. The acquittal of the pilot and the navigator on the grave charges of manslaughter, negligent homicide, involuntary homicide and negligence, although both had to leave their military careers, was not well received by the Italian government, and diplomatic relations between the two countries weakened as a result.
