ITALY 1999

Italian Republic stamps from 1999, for sale online at Io Collezionista. On 24 March 1999, the year in which the Italian Republic stamps in this subcategory were issued, a TIR heavy goods lorry caught fire while crossing the busy Mont Blanc tunnel. Because of the high temperatures reached by the burning plastics and the oven effect of the tunnel itself, the emergency services needed about 53 hours to bring the flames under control. 39 people lost their lives in the accident, and it took almost 3 years of work to reopen the tunnel to traffic. Among the Italian Republic stamps of 1999 of greatest interest is an official folder holding 12 stamps of 800 Lire from 1999 dedicated to Milan's league title in the 1998-1999 season.
