Italian Republic stamps from 2000, available worldwide at Io Collezionista. On 28 July 2000, the year in which these Italian Republic stamps were issued, the last banknote in Lire was printed. The Lira had accompanied the Italian state from 1861 onwards, and the decree that formally established it as the currency of the country dates to 24 August 1862, when every other pre unification currency was withdrawn. From 1 January 2002 the Euro would begin to circulate legally in every state of the economic and monetary union, Italy included.
