ITALY 2001

Italian Republic stamps from 2001, for sale at Io Collezionista. On 31 March 2001, the year to which these Italian Republic stamps refer, the Florentine T-bone steak was officially banned. It was a precautionary measure decided by the Ministry of Health itself, following the epidemic of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) that swept Europe in that period. The media gave the affair great prominence, and a catchy name was even coined for the cattle disease, mad cow sickness. The Florentine steak returned to sale only in October 2005. Among the most interesting Italian Republic stamps of 2001 is a lot of 800 Lire stamps from 2001 marking the centenary of the first stamps.
