ITALY 2005

Italy 2005 stamps, for sale online at Io Collezionista. On 4 March 2005, the year these Italian Republic stamps were issued, the Italian secret service (SISMI) agent Nicola Calipari lost his life in Iraq in the closing stage of the operation that had freed the journalist Giuliana Sgrena, kidnapped a month earlier by the Organization of Islamic Jihad. The car carrying Calipari, Sgrena and the driver Andrea Carpani was fired on at a United States military checkpoint. The account given by the marines differed markedly from that of the survivors, Sgrena and Carpani, provoking considerable controversy and straining relations between Italy and the USA. The soldier who opened fire on the vehicle was never tried, because Italian courts had no jurisdiction over the case and the USA did not cooperate, rejecting a letter of request from the Rome prosecutor's office. Among the Italy 2005 stamps offered by Io Collezionista are a 2005 stamp in a folder dedicated to the Italian Army and 4 philatelic cards from 2005 dedicated to the Turin Winter Olympics. In the main Stamps category you can browse other subcategories devoted to particular historical periods, such as Italian States stamps and Italian Colonies stamps.
