ITALY 2006

On 11 April 2006, the year these Italian Republic stamps were issued, police captured Bernardo Provenzano, Riina's successor at the head of Cosa Nostra and a fugitive for more than forty years. Provenzano's role was to mediate between two opposing factions, those in favour of spectacular acts such as bombings and those against, in the aftermath of the 1992 and 1993 massacres that killed Falcone and Borsellino, and to launch the criminal organization's new course of operating invisibly within civil society and politics. Among the Italy 2006 stamps of greatest interest are a series of 3 philatelic cards from 2006 dedicated to Lake Como and a 2006 philatelic card dedicated to the Montecitorio philatelic exhibition on the Kingdom of Italy.
