The island, third largest in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia, is a member both of the Commonwealth, since March 1961, and of the European Union, since May 2004. Since 1983 the northern part of Cyprus has been under the control of the self proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which no country in the international community recognises apart from Turkey.
