The British Overseas Territory, which the United Nations lists among the non self governing territories and which antiquity knew as one of the two Pillars of Hercules, probably owes its name to the Mount of Tariq, in Arabic Jabal Tariq, a geological formation named after the commander Tariq ibn Ziyad, conqueror of the Iberian peninsula in the 8th century AD. A member of the European Economic Community (EEC) since 1973 and, like the United Kingdom, party for the moment to the treaty of accession to the European Union, Gibraltar has never shown any interest in moving closer to Spain, as the most recent referendum of 2002 confirmed, in which 98% of those entitled to vote rejected the proposal to share sovereignty between Spain and the United Kingdom.
