Popular legend tells that the island was created after a fierce battle between the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill and his Scottish opponent. The first tried to strike the second with a clod of earth, which never reached its target and landed in the sea instead. Today the Isle of Man is known above all for its high gross national income, the fifth in the world, its varied banking and insurance services, and the low taxation through which the local government has drawn the attention of many corporations, in recent years from the high tech sector too, as well as of wealthy individuals.
