Montenegro

Montenegro stamps available at Io Collezionista. Montenegro is one of the states that emerged from the break up of Yugoslavia in 1993; more precisely, the territory remained joined to Serbia, as Serbia and Montenegro, until 3 June 2006, when the Republic was proclaimed and the will of the people was carried out, having been expressed in favour of independence at a referendum held some weeks earlier on 21 May. The name Montenegro was probably given to the region by Venetian sailors, on account of the dense dark forests covering the Dinaric Alps, though it may also derive from the name of a Byzantine family, the Comneni, or from certain populations who lived there in medieval times, also known as nigri latini.
