24/3/1929 GERMANY - Orient voyage of the Graf Zeppelin Lz 127. Cover flown from Friedrichshafen (Bodensee), dropped over Er Ramle (Jaffa, Palestine). (The airship took off at 00.52 on the 25th, reached Waldshut, Lyon, Marseille, Rome and Catanzaro, overflew Crete and Cyprus at 13.00, Haifa at 16.25, Jerusalem and the Dead Sea, and began the return at 06.02 on the 27th by way of Athens, Kotor, Vienna and Ulm, landing at Friedrichshafen on the 28th at 10.16.) First North America voyage, return flight of the airship Lz 127. American postal card with added franking, from Lakehurst to Friedrichshafen (Bodensee). (At 2 in the morning of 29 October the Graf Zeppelin Lz 127 began the return, following the ocean shipping lane as far as the 42nd parallel north, then turning over Newfoundland and reaching the Bay of Biscay, heading for Friedrichshafen, where it landed at dawn on 1 November.) 10/10/1928 GERMANY - FRIEDRICHSHAFEN (Bodensee) - Luftpost, first voyage to North America of the airship Lz 127. Card franked with a 2 mark stamp (Cat. A36), with the New York arrival postmark. (The flight was made with great difficulty owing to bad weather, under the direction of Dr Hugo Eckener; the route, lengthened to 9,926 km, was covered to the limit of the airship's range in 111 hours and 44 minutes at a speed of 89 km/h.) 31/9/1924 GERMANY, MUNICH - First transatlantic voyage to North America of the airship ZR-3. Cover flown from Munich to Milwaukee, arriving 19/10/1924 (USA). (The departure took place from Friedrichshafen and, after a non-stop flight of 81 hours and 17 minutes at an average speed of 110 km/h, the voyage ended at the Lakehurst airfield, New York.) 20/9/1934 BRAZIL - 8th South America voyage of the airship Lz 127 (15 to 25 September). Cover of the National Philatelic Exhibition of Rio de Janeiro, franked with the complete set (Cat. Yvert 269/272) plus an Airmail stamp (Yvert A22). Return flight, "Servizio Aereo Transoceanico Brasile Europa - Condor Zeppelin Lufthansa", arrival Turin 26 September 1934. 30/6/1934 - CYRENAICA - Registered letter cover from Benghazi to Barcelona, franked with two Cyrenaica Airmail stamps of 1 and 2 Lire (Cat. Sassone 9/10) and a 1,75 Lire stamp of Libya (Cat. Sassone 106). The cover was carried via Friedrichshafen and from there to Barcelona by the Zeppelin airship LZ 127. It also bears the Rome postal handstamp of 27/1/1934 for the direct Rome to Buenos Aires flight, the "Cachet" of that same flight, and a rectangular handstamp reading "perduta coincidenza primo volo Roma-Buenos Ayres", missed connection on the first Rome to Buenos Aires flight. 26/5/1933 - KINGDOM OF ITALY - Italian Cruise of the airship LZ 127 (29/30 May 1933). Card franked with 3 Lire Airmail (Cat. Unificato A/45) plus 20 Cent. Imperiale (247) - Cancellations Milano Corrisp., Napoli Posta Aerea, Roma Posta Aerea, plus the Zeppelin cancellation. (At 1,04 on 29 May the airship left Friedrichshafen on the cruise bound for Rome and at 16,30 the same day landed at Ciampino; at 19,45 it took on many mail sacks and set off for Naples, where the postal drop was planned, though because darkness had fallen the drop was made over Nettuno.) 26/5/1933 SAN MARINO - Lz 127 Crociera Italiana (Italian Cruise), 29 to 30 May 1933. Aerogramme franked with the 80 cent. Airmail (Cat. Unificato A2) and the 3 Lire surcharge on 50 cent. orange (Cat. Unificato A11), sent to Switzerland. (All aerogrammes and letters sent from San Marino for the Zeppelin cruise, whether addressed to Italy or abroad, carried the special blue or violet handstamp, and the San Marino post used a green octagonal cancellation applied at Citta, Borgo and Serravalle.) 1929 UNITED STATES - Round-the-world voyage of the Zeppelin airship Lz 127. Postal card with added franking and an Orange cancellation. It left on the morning of 15 August to begin its circumnavigation under the command of Dr Hugo Eckener, with 20 passengers aboard and a crew of 41, ending at Friedrichshafen. The itinerary included stops at Tokyo, Los Angeles and New York, and the voyage was completed in 12 days.
