(When stamps were first introduced in Lombardy-Venetia, old pre-philatelic handstamps were pressed back into use and were themselves replaced by others of the most varied forms: mute, framed, oval or cogwheel. These marks are to be regarded as almost provisional, like the Camerlata one, since they were withdrawn and replaced by the standard mark, the single circle with day and date.) (Although the Lombardy-Venetia postal administration did not operate a double-postmark system, between the end of 1850 and the middle of 1851 some experiments were made in that direction and 14 offices used mute postmarks accompanied by a handstamp carrying the place of origin and the date.)
