Corfu Italian Occupation Issues Stamps, available online at Io Collezionista. The first contact between the Kingdom of Italy and Corfu dates to 1923, when Mussolini attempted to annex the Greek island: the action was triggered by the Ioannina massacre, in which an entire Italian military delegation sent to Greece lost its lives. The actual occupation came, however, in the Second World War, as part of the eastern military campaign that also took in Albania. Following the armistice proclaimed by Badoglio in September 1943, Corfu was invaded by German troops who overcame the Italian defenders within 12 days, the intervention of the air division proving decisive.
