Fiume

Fiume Issues Stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. The occupation of Fiume, from September 1919 to December 1920, a city then contested between the Kingdom of Italy and Yugoslavia, was carried through by the well known intellectual and poet Gabriele d'Annunzio together with some units of the army, infantry and artillery, about 2600 men, who lent themselves to an initiative organised by figures of the nationalist camp. The action of the legionaries was disowned by the national government, which undertook, with no immediate result, to settle the troublesome question by issuing an ultimatum to the rebels. The signing of the treaty of Rapallo in November 1920 hastened the end of the occupation, which came between the last week of December and January 1921: there were some skirmishes between the Fiume legionaries and the Italian army, but the former could not hold out long.
