Ghadames

Ghadames Issues Stamps, available online at Io Collezionista. Ghadames is a Libyan town near the border with Algeria whose historic centre is on the UNESCO world heritage list. The Kingdom of Italy's campaign of conquest in Libya was launched by the Giolitti government in 1911 and committed almost 100,000 soldiers. On the eve of the First World War, however, the army held only Tripolitania securely, while the more inland areas, such as the Fezzan, remained the ground of frequent clashes with local fighters. The campaign resumed only in 1921, under the Facta government, and would lead Italian troops to take further portions of Libyan territory, among them the town of Ghadames itself in 1923.
