The Italian occupation of the city dates from the Second World War, from 1941 to be precise, when it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy and became, together with Lower Carniola, a province of the Venezia Giulia. After the armistice of 1943 German troops reached the area and left it only in 1945, on the arrival of Josip Broz Tito's forces.
