Austrian Occupation of Friuli Issues Stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. The occupation of Friuli by Austro-Hungarian and German troops came in the aftermath of the twelfth battle of the Isonzo, far better known as the battle of Caporetto, in October 1917. Because of a series of grave strategic errors and failures in the chain of command, the engagement turned rapidly against the royal army, which could do nothing but fall back towards the Piave. Among the grave consequences of that heavy defeat was the exodus of thousands of civilians, frightened by the enemy advance and abandoned by the Italian soldiers: there was no evacuation plan at all.
