Algeria

Algeria stamps available online at Io Collezionista. The country, a semi presidential republic and a member of the Arab League, takes its name from the capital Algiers, which in turn owes its name to the large rocks off the coast, called al-Jazair, the islands in Arabic. In the western imagination the state is usually associated with symbols such as the casbah of Algiers, an old quarter that is also a Unesco heritage site, the Sahara desert, which covers much of the Maghreb, the westernmost part of North Africa where Algeria also lies, and the Foreign Legion, the elite French military corps established in 1831 by the sovereign Louis Philippe and used more than once during the war of conquest in Algeria (1830-1847).
