Argentina

Argentina stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. The name of the state comes from the Latin argentum and was inspired by the legend of the Sierra del Plata. According to the accounts of the first Portuguese and Spanish explorers in the 16th century, after a disastrous shipwreck between 1500 and 1516 the surviving sailors made contact with the local peoples, who gave them various objects made of the precious metal. The story reached Europe some years later, in 1524, but another twelve years had to pass before the name made its official debut, on a Venetian map of 1536 to be precise. Among the items in this category are a postally used cover in Argentina Stamps 1953 and an FDC card for the Day of the Americas in Argentina Stamps 1961.
