Australia

Australia stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. The name Australia became famous after the enormous success of the explorer Matthew Flinders and his book A Voyage to Terra Australis: published in London in 1814, it was to all effects the first documented circumnavigation of the continent. Once the popularity of the name was clear, the Colonial Office, with the authorisation of the Admiralty, officially adopted Australia to refer to the corresponding colonial territories the Empire controlled. Among the stamps in this category are several dedicated to John Macarthur (1767-1834), a British officer but also an entrepreneur and a pioneer of the wool industry, a sector in which the country became one of the world leaders. For the centenary of his death the Post Office dedicated a first commemorative stamp to Macarthur (Australia Stamps 1926/1948).
