Burma
Burma stamps, available worldwide at Io Collezionista. Burma gained independence from the British Empire in 1948 and kept a democratic form of government until 1962, the year the military took power and installed a military dictatorship which only from 2010 opened the way to changes awaited for decades, among them free parliamentary elections and the release of many political opponents, chief among them Aung San Suu Kyi, then State Counsellor of Burma, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the President's Office. Although the problems surrounding the Rohingya Muslim minority, army repression and an ethnicity not officially recognised, remain unresolved, she was at the time one of the leading international figures in the fight for human rights.
