Although the first explorers found an uninhabited area, the discovery dating to 1456 and attributed to the Italian navigator Alvise Cadamosto, it is very likely that the islands had been visited earlier by Arab navigators and by settled fishing tribes from Guinea. After the discovery of America, Cape Verde became a strategic trading stop for merchant ships sailing from Europe to the new continent, including those used by slave traders on the profitable Atlantic trade in slaves destined to work in the fields and the mines.
