Cuba

Cuba stamps available at Io Collezionista. The origin of the name remains uncertain to this day: for some it may come from the word cubanacan, a central place, while for others it may draw on cubao, literally where fertile ground is found. Both words are in the Taino language, of the first Amerindian people to reach and settle in the Caribbean. In the 20th century the state entered history and the collective imagination through the events of the Cuban revolution, the battle of Santa Clara and the Bay of Pigs, and through the figures of Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara, whose most widely seen image draws on a photograph taken by Alberto Diaz Gutierrez on 5 March 1960.
