MALAWI

Malawi stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. Malawi is a country of East Africa with almost 19 million inhabitants and one of the least developed economies on the planet: each person is estimated to live on less than 2 dollars a day. Because of precarious sanitary conditions, life expectancy is short and infant mortality high. The presence of HIV makes the situation worse still. The name Malawi is thought to come from that of the lake of the same name, in the Bantu language, or from the word describing the reflection of the sun on its waters; alternatively from the name of a tribe that lived in the southern part of the country. The earlier name the British gave Malawi, Nyasaland, a protectorate from 1907, likewise drew on a word of the local Yao language, Nyasa, used to refer to that same stretch of water.
