Morocco

Morocco stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. The name of the north African state derives from that of the well known city of Marrakesh, whose Berber form Mur-Akush means land of god. Morocco is a member state of the Arab League and is currently one of the soundest economies on the continent, fifth by gross domestic product. Over the centuries the territory has seen various rulers and cultural influences, Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and Arab, the most recent being the French: with the treaty of Fez in 1912 the sultan Mulay Abd al-Hafid turned Morocco into a protectorate of France, while a second protectorate, that of northern Morocco, was under Spanish control. Independence came in 1956, the year the modern Maghrebi kingdom was born, a name translated from the official Arabic.
