Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. Puerto Rico is the smallest island of the Greater Antilles and can be described as an unincorporated territory of the United States. The phrase denotes a territory freely associated with a sovereign state, which may however release itself from the arrangement by referendum. The recent votes of 2012 and 2017 could yet make Puerto Rico the 51st federated state of the USA. The first human settlements date to 2000 BC; in later ages came the Igneri (2nd to 5th centuries AD) and the Taino (7th to 11th centuries), whose culture remained dominant until the arrival of the Spanish in 1493. Puerto Rico was discovered by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage of exploration in the Antilles, in November 1493.
